ICO reveals new strategy for handling data breaches in the public sector

Recommended Posts

UK’s new information commissioner John Edwards has recently worked on setting out a revised approach to how the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) works with the public sector as well as cutting back on issuing fines.

Edwards aims to be more proactive about raising data protection standards in the public sector but to see his role as a remedy, not a deterrent. Fines impact public sectors by reducing budgets for vital services, which can affect people badly. Hence, for the next two years, the ICO will be trialing an approach to reduce the impact of fines on the public.

The ICO’s overall approach to investigations will however not change while he will work to do more to publicise data breaches. For this, he hopes to have more investments of time, money, and resources in ensuring data protection practices remain fit for the future. Edwards has also confirmed that he has secured a commitment from the Cabinet Office and the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport to set up a senior leadership group to encourage data protection compliance at Westminster.
