Indeed, a new EU regulation, supported by the Digital Services Act (DSA), is urging tech firms such as Google and Meta, to deal with disinformation and deepfakes on their platforms. If not, they will face fines of up to 6% of their global turnover. Deepfakes and fake news are getting out of hand thus it is essential to strengthening code to prevent these as well as increase transparency around political advertising. It is essential to curb the spread of new malicious behaviors such as bots, fake accounts, and deepfakes in order to make the internet safer and more accurate for everyone. Tech companies that have signed up for the enhanced code will have to share more information with the EU ahead of the implementation in 2023. Besides, platforms with more than 45 million monthly active users in the EU will have to report to the Commission every six months.
