Bringing more diversity into tech has been done mainly by women

Recommended Posts

Over the past few years, it was noticed that diversity in the technology industry has been mainly done by women.

Indeed, a recent study by Computer Weekly and Tech Target showed that only 23% of tech workers feel like men need to be involved in integrating women into IT teams while 44% agree that men should not help women get into the sector. Women are then the ones advocating for more diversity in the industry but it shouldn’t be the case – diversity is everyone’s responsibility.

Having support for underrepresented groups from those who are in the majority in the tech sector is vital in order to hire and retain diverse talent. This could help organisations be more inclusive and have more of a sense of belonging. Besides, bringing women and underrepresented groups into the enterprise could bring a lot of potential and diverse opportunities to employers.

Unfortunately, the number of women in the tech industry has remained the same over the past five years and many businesses have stopped their effort to bring more gender diversity and equality. The pandemic and the impact of Brexit have certainly affected the progress around diversity, and thus, there is a lot of work to do still, especially from those in majority groups, to see actual progress.
