Apple this week shared an introductory video for its new Apple Developer channel on YouTube, where developers will be able to watch WWDC 2024 sessions in June. "The Apple Developer channel is where coders, students, and creatives of all kinds stay up to date on the latest Apple software, technologies, and platforms," says Apple. "Subscribe and watch our latest videos from the Worldwide Developers Conference and beyond." Apple has already uploaded a collection of WWDC 2023 videos to the channel in up to 4K quality. WWDC 2024 runs from June 10 through June 14, and the session videos will also continue to be shared on the Apple Developer website and app. During the event, Apple is expected to announce iOS 18 and many other software updates. On Monday, June 10, Apple plans to hold a keynote viewing party for select students and developers, allowing them to watch the pre-recorded unveiling of new software updates. Apple accepted applications for the event until yesterday, and now emails are going out to developers who have been selected by the lottery process. The event will include "exciting new programming," an opportunity to meet with Apple experts, and other WWDC-related "special activities." At last year's WWDC event, developers and students were provided with refreshments in the morning, followed by the keynote event. The Platforms State of the Union followed, and there were two Apple Park tours to choose from. The day ended with the Apple Design Awards and an evening dinner. Boom! Developers were required to pay $1,599 to purchase a ticket to attend, and space was limited. Starting in 2020, Apple turned WWDC into an online event open to all developers, but there have been small in-person events at ‌Apple Park‌ since 2022. There will be a reception event at Apple's Infinite Loop campus on Sunday, June 9, where attendees can pick up their badges early. Apple extended invitations to Current Apple Developer Program members, Apple Developer Enterprise Program members, Apple Entrepreneur Camp alumni, and Swift Student Challenge winners from 2022 to 2024. Attendees were chosen by random selection. While there is no cost to attend the ‌Apple Park‌ special event, Apple does not cover transportation or lodging. The date has finally been set for Apple’s annual announcement event WWDC, and we expect some new AI announcements alongside software refreshes like macOS Sonoma updates and a peak at iOS 18. While that’s all pretty exciting, I’m not interested in any of that! What I want to see is an M3 Mac mini - in pink. Now, I know right off the back that sound’s a little outlandish. Asking for an M3 Mac mini seems pretty reasonable to me, though - I mean, Apple launched the M2 Mac mini last year in January, so it’ll be almost a year and a half by the time WWDC kicks off on June 10, 2024. The MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac have been updated with the M3 chip, so it’s about time the Mac mini got the same treatment. The M3 chip was announced at Apple’s Scary Fast event last October and has proven to be the best processor Apple has put out so far. The system-on-a-chip (SoC) has the same 8-core CPU architecture as the M2 chip but offers better performance thanks to the increased number of transistors on the chip. Multi-core CPU tests were up 18%, which bodes well for people who need a laptop that can handle hefty video-rendering tasks without breaking a sweat. Prettier in pink I use an M1 Mac mini almost every day for work or my own writing and online shopping (lots of online shopping), and I’ve been waiting for the Mac mini to not just get an updated chip but to join the iMac in getting some more colorful designs. I adore the colors of the iMac, but I could never commit to buying one of the best all-in-one’s with the current size of my desktop setup at home. The Mac mini is the perfect size for me and honestly looks super cute - just imagine how much cuter it could be if it came in color! Mac mini’s are so versatile and used by all sorts of creative people like movie makers, musicians, artists, and more. I think adding a splash of color would lend the same uniqueness and ‘icon’ status that iMac already enjoys. Out of the two, the iMac has more of a market share than the Mac mini, and having an interesting design change could be a start for making the Mac mini more popular. Apple wouldn’t even need to start with a whole new color palette - the colors of the iMac are perfect as they are and could easily be transferred over to the mini PCs! The pink iMac is my absolute favorite, and I can’t even imagine how adorable it would be to have a pastel pink Mac mini on my desk. But setting my Barbie-themed computing dreams aside, I do really hope we see the Mac mini get an M3 refresh. You might also like... Apple WWDC 2024 was announced for June 10 (Image credit: Apple) Apple’s next Worldwide Developer Conference got a date this week – and it’s due to land on June 10, 2024. During the opening keynote we expect to get our first look at Apple’s next batch of software updates – iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 – as well as some hardware reveals – perhaps new Macs, a new Apple silicone chipset, or maybe even a Vision Pro successor (though that seems unlikely). One reveal that seems all but certain is the announcement of Apple’s big generative AI plans. While it hasn’t said anything specifically, Apple's senior VP for marketing Greg Joswiak gave a less than subtle hint with a Tweet saying of WWDC 2024 “It’s going to be Absolutely Incredible!” – note the capitalization of Absolutely and Incredible. OpenAI wowed us with Sora videos (Image credit: OpenAI / shy kids) If you’re like us (and who isn’t?) you’ve been watching OpenAI Sora videos on TikTok with an increasing level of wonder and worry. The company responsible for DALL-E and ChatGPT has been posting all manner of bite-sized video creations that, if they weren’t so other-worldly, would look as if they were filmed in a real world. Put simply, this prompt-based generative AI video tool is unlike anything we’ve seen before, and no one really knows what it’ll do to the film, television, and animation industry. With an apparent nod to that concern, OpenAI recently opened up Sora to a set of independent artists and creators. Instead of throwing their hands up and running away in fear for their livelihoods, they created a set of unforgettable short films, including one that might rival an Oscar-winning short (okay, a very short film). You just have to see these AI-generated films to believe them. We guarantee you’ll be shocked and a little entertained. The Samsung Galaxy Ring dropped another big launch hint (Image credit: Samsung) Sometimes it feels like the Galaxy Ring is launching in slow motion, but the wearable inched closer to lift-off this week when it was spotted inside the battery widget on Samsung phones. This didn’t really tell us anything new about the Oura rival, other than hinting that it’s on track for a full launch – most likely in July alongside phones like the Galaxy Z Flip 6. But it got us excited about the Galaxy Ring’s potential again, particularly for sleep tracking. If all goes well, it could be one of the gadgets of the year. Hulu officially merged with Disney Plus (Image credit: Disney) Hulu and Disney Plus have officially tied the knot. Now in the US alongside hubs for Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, and National Geographic you’ll see a Hulu option that’ll show you shows and films from the Hulu catalogue. Of course, to watch this content you’ll need to pay for a Hulu subscription. A Disney Plus and Hulu bundle will start at $9.99/month for the standard subscription with ads (just $2 more than Basic Disney Plus). Meanwhile, you’ll pay $19.99/month if you want a Premium subscription to both services that offers 4K video and no ads. Just note that some shows – like Modern Family and Love Island – won’t appear in Disney Plus right away thanks to “content licensing restrictions” per Variety. It’s unclear when these restrictions will stop getting in the way of Disney's new one-stop streaming service shop, but we hope it’s soon. Nikon launched a versatile zoom lens (Image credit: Nikon ) We get the occasional 10x optical zoom lens for DSLR and mirrorless cameras, but 14x? That’s unheard of, until now. Nikon dropped the new Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR, which looks like a superb all-in-one zoom lens for its full-frame mirrorless cameras such as the Nikon Z6 II. Its wide end covers shooting everyday observations and landscapes, its telephoto setting is ideal for distant wildlife and landmarks, and its close-up photography skills are super impressive thanks to its close minimum focus distance. At 725g it’s pretty compact, too, ideal for your travels. The lens also comes equipped with 5 stops of image stabilization which is exactly what you’ll need for those telephoto snaps. It won’t be as sharp as a prime lens, but the 28-400mm could just be the last Nikon lens you ever buy. Cambridge unveiled its first-ever noise-cancelling earbuds (Image credit: Cambridge Audio) The company that launched one of our all-time favorite sets of earbuds (namely the 2021-issue Melomania 1 Plus) is back with a new earbuds proposition – and the fact that they’re CA’s first noise-canceling option isn’t even their biggest selling point. The firm has actually launched two models: the regular Melomania M100 and a limited edition Melomania M100 How High Edition. The latter comes in a bright yellow case that's an homage to the music video for The Charlatans' hit How High, in which singer Tim Burgess wore a glorious bright yellow mackintosh. But both products come with a veritable ace up their sleeves: the slinky vocal stylings of Matt Berry, aka Steven Toast (Toast of London/Toast of Tinseltown), aka Lazslo (What We Do in the Shadows). That’s right, Matt Berry will purr ‘Noise canceling’ or ‘Transparency’ in your ear as often as you’d like, for the princely sum of £169 (about $219 / AU$326). Google pulled the plug on the Pixel 6a (Image credit: Future / Philip Berne) This week Google unceremoniously killed off the Pixel 6a – with the budget smartphone being pulled from all of its official online stores all over the world. Even the official protective case has disappeared from the digital shelves. Of course, you can still buy the device from third-party retailers, but you might not want to as we believe this is a sign that Google is planning to launch the Pixel 8a very soon. Lots of leaks have been teasing the 8a in recent weeks – suggesting it could be pricier than the Pixel 7a, and that it’ll likely use the same Tensor G3 chipset as the Pixel 8 – so it seems possible that a new Google handset is on the way. We might have to wait a little while for more details though, Google’s next official event isn’t until I/O 2024 which kicks off on May 14. Students who entered the WWDC 2024 coding challenge can today sign in to Apple's Swift Student Challenge website to find out if they've won. Apple has selected 350 winners, who are eligible to attend the ‌WWDC 2024‌ special event at Apple Park on Monday, June 10. Apple today announced official dates for the 35th annual Worldwide Developers Conference, which is set to begin on Monday, June 10. In its announcements, Apple sometimes gives us minor hints on what to expect, and Greg Joswiak is making some not-so-subtle references to AI. In a tweet, Joswiak said that the WWDC 2024 event is going to be "Absolutely Incredible," and he deliberately capitalized the first two letters of each word, AI. Over the course of the last few months, Apple executives have confirmed Apple's work on AI, Apple CEO Tim Cook said in February that Apple plans to "break new ground" on generative AI in 2024. "We believe it will unlock transformative opportunities for our users," said Cook. In preparation for WWDC 2024, Apple today launched a new Apple Developer YouTube account, which will be used to share WWDC sessions and events that developers can follow along with. Apple has seeded the new account with a selection of videos from WWDC 2023, and this gives us an idea of the kind of content that we can expect to see during the ‌WWDC 2024‌ season. Videos are organized into playlists by topic, making it easy to find content on the App Store, Swift, Spatial Computing, Safari, and more. In the ‌WWDC 2024‌ announcement, Apple said that developers can experience WWDC24 throughout the week on YouTube, referencing the new YouTube channel. Apple just announced that WWDC 2024 is set to kick off on June 10, 2024, and there's a lot of expectation that Apple will make some new AI announcements this year. Apple's announcement event states that there will be a special event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, which is where the M2 chip, along with the newly redesigned MacBook Air, was announced at WWDC 2022, and where the MacBook Air 15-inch, M2 Ultra, and Apple Vision Pro were announced at WWDC 2023. Rather than being a consumer product affair, WWDC (short for Worldwide Developer Conference) is a weeklong conference in California that is much more geared towards professional software developers in the Apple ecosystem than introducing new products. However, Apple has used the conference's opening keynote in recent years to make major new announcements, like the Mac Pro, Apple M2 chip, and more. A lot has happened since the last WWDC, namely the explosive growth of generative AI, which Apple has said will be coming to its products later this year. Given the audience for this conference, June 10 would seem like a perfect time to lay out Apple's AI strategy to compete with the likes of Google and Microsoft. Apple is notoriously tight-lipped about its reveals before they are announced on stage, but they do drop hints, and Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior VP for marketing, wasn't exactly subtle in his sharing of the announcement on X (formerly Twitter). (Image credit: Getty Images) What we expect to see at Apple WWDC 2024 As far as AI goes, we expect that Apple will show some on-device generative AI, like GPTs or image generation running locally on iPhones and iPads, and probably on MacBooks and Macs, too. The Apple M-series and A-series chips in its computers and mobile devices, respectively, have had neural processors (NPUs) built into them for a couple of years now but there hasn't been a big push from Apple to get into the kind of generative AI work that hit the industry like a meteor in late 2022. Apple's neural engine, as it calls its NPUs, should be more than capable of running the kinds of AI workloads that an Intel or AMD NPU is running now, and Qualcomm has been pretty aggressive in promoting its Snapdragon chips' generative AI capabilities, particularly in the Samsung Galaxy S24. To compete, Apple must deliver a generative AI answer, and a keynote to a conference full of software developers who will likely be tasked with using and expanding on new AI toolkits and frameworks in iOS, macOS, and beyond seems like the perfect venue. That doesn't mean it will be all AI, though. We'll also likely see iOS 18 announced at WWDC, likely with new AI features leading the way, but also with other more typical quality-of-life improvements across Apple's various software platforms, like watchOS 11. (Image credit: Apple) On the hardware front, it's far too soon for new iPhones to be released, though we're coming up on the perennial cadence of iPad releases, so we wouldn't be surprised to see them make an appearance. The only other hardware announcement we might see is the Apple M3 Ultra, following up on the late 2023 release of new MacBook Pro models with M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips. The M3 Ultra is a workstation-class chip, so it'll be something that an industry and developer audience would be far more interested in than the average consumer would, so a WWDC announcement of a Mac Studio and Mac Pro refresh with M3 Ultra is a possibility. We'll almost certainly hear a lot more speculation and many more rumors swirling around as we get closer to the June 10 kick-off to WWDC 2024, but we'll have to wait until Tim Cook takes the stage at Apple Park to know for sure what Apple has planned for the rest of 2024. Apple today announced that its 35th annual Worldwide Developers Conference is set to take place from Monday, June 10 to Friday, June 14. As with WWDC events since 2020, WWDC 2024 will be an online event that is open to all developers at no cost. ‌WWDC 2024‌ will include online sessions and labs so that developers can learn about new features and software set to be announced at WWDC. Apple will hold a ‌WWDC 2024‌ keynote event on Monday, June 10 to show off iOS 18, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, and visionOS 2. The keynote event will be available on the Apple Developer app, the Apple website, and YouTube, with Apple also planning to share videos and information all week long. Though ‌WWDC 2024‌ is an online event, Apple is once again planning a special event for select developers and students, which is set to take place on June 10 at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California. Attendees will be able to watch the keynote and State of the Union presentations at ‌Apple Park‌, as well as meet Apple employees and attend the Apple Design Awards. Current Apple Developer Program members, Apple Entrepreneur Camp alumni, prior Swift Student Challenge winners, and current Apple Developer Enterprise Program members can enter to attend the Apple Park event, with Apple choosing participants through a random lottery. Apple normally holds a Swift Student Challenge when the WWDC dates are announced, but the challenge kicked off earlier this year. Winners will be announced on Thursday, March 28. Winners will be eligible to attend the special event at ‌Apple Park‌, and 50 Distinguished Winners will be invited to Cupertino for a three-day experience.
